Build a Lightweight, Lasting Blog with Astro
Start with static content and prioritize speed, readable pages and low maintenance. The technical foundations of this blog.
Updated
A website can be simple: thoughtful writing, clear navigation and pages you can read as soon as they open.
Start with content
This blog manages articles with Markdown and MDX. Every article has a title, description, publication date, category and tags, checked by Content Collections during the build.
Explain the topic first, then use the description to tell readers what they’ll get. Categories organize content; tags connect related subjects. Series can be read in order, reducing the time spent looking for the next installment.
Speed comes from doing less
Pages are generated at build time, so browsers receive complete HTML. Reading doesn’t require a client-side application to start, a database or an always-running server. System fonts and explicit image dimensions reduce layout shifts during loading.
The homepage focuses on the article list. Search and categories help readers find content. Covers provide supporting information, while the text keeps a comfortable reading width and line spacing.
Search friendliness is basic housekeeping
Each article has its own canonical URL, description and Article structured data. Sitemap and RSS are generated with each build. After publication, search engines are notified of the update.
Good tools make it easier to keep writing, rather than turn maintenance into another burden.
Next comes the ongoing work: recording discoveries worth keeping.
